ISSC’10 – the final day

The International Summer Science Camp has reached its‘ peak on Friday- the time has come to present the work done during the whole week. Despite working a lot, the participants got tired because of the lack of sleep, not due to over-working.

The best proof for that – the last workshops which were designed for applying finishing touches to the presentation. A bit more than half of the partcipants arrived on time in the morning but the work was did not stop and everybody had a chance to contribute to the presentations.

After the lunch the participants had a lecture by the captain of the 11th crew of „The Millenium Odyssey“ Paulius E. Kovas. The campers were taken aback by the patriotic idea of the yacht „Ambersail“. They also where told what lessons can be learnt while sailing in the sea from the captains‘ personal experience. „Good idea doesn‘t require wings, it requires land“, „Fight for your life no matter what happens“, „You don‘t know how strong you are“, „Thousands of opportunities await you, just look for them“ – assured the captain and the audience could not disagree because the on the occasion of Lithuanias Milleniem the whole world was got to know that there is „One word – Lithuania“.

Next came the most exciting part of the camp – the presentations of workgroups and the unwanted closing ceremony. The presentations were great, every idea was original, different and it the performances where well prepared. It was hard to believe that such ideas could be formed and developed in such short time but the participants of this camp proved it is possible. However we had to pick the winner and it was the third team with its‘ moderator little Artiomas. Closing ceremony was filled with memories and impressions from the camp, gratitude for the participants and organisers and yet another one huge spiral fitting into a square.

The happiest and most fun-packed farewell party came next. Everybody was singing and dancing, eating cake, accepting prizes and, of course, killing. Until the last moment only three people survived and so the final „Last Man Standing“ battle began. But even it could not solve this once and for all so the final prize was shared by two Danish participants – Lea and Pelle. What can we say – Denmark produces the best killing machines!

The time in this camp did not stand still – it passed within a blink of an eye. After a week of work, fun and international socialising the time to part has come. We hope that the participants will carry only the best impressions about Lithuania with them and ISSC will be a great reason to meet again in Denmark next year!

Milena Laban, Line Guldbrand – „It’s great project that should continue”

As ISSC’10 is approaching to the end, some thoughts about next year are occurring more and more often. Denmark is going host ISSC’11, so the international coordinator and the main organizer of product and team from UNF (Ungdommens Naturvidenskabelige Forening) organization – Milena Laban and Line Guldbrand were willing to share their ideas.

What are your impressions about this camp after four days?

Milena: To be quite honest, I would like the camp to be more about science. There is too much sociology for me here.

How do you estimate lectures and workshops?

Milena: I think that it’s very cool that the workshops are so ‘workfull’ and we have to speak to investors. So there is like a purpose for everything we do. I like that there was a connection through the team. But the lectures… I think most of the subjects ought to be interesting if the lecturer himself or herself were better in speaking in front of the audience and so on. For example, lecture ‘Women in science’, it would be really interesting to discuss, but the lecturer was sitting and just reading some facts.

What do you think about participants of this camp?

Line: They are young people having fun together and doing their best.

Milena: It’s bad for those who don’t speak English well enough, they just can’t express themselves.

You’re going to make a presentation about ISSC’11 during the closing ceremony. What are you going to tell?

Line: It’s going to be about Denmark and the city, where ISSC’11 is going to be in, it’s Aalborg. We haven’t decided about specific arrangement yet, but we have some ideas. So I’m going to mention something we are thinking about.

So maybe you have some ideas for next years’ topic?

Milena: We are thinking about having a topic like science of tomorrow. I mean something about university trying to develop something new and also look for what could change a world in a future.

What would you do differently from this camp?

Line: It should be more scientific, more lectures, more about actual science.

It’s your first ISSC?

Milena: I’m third time participating.

Line: It’s my first.

And what about other experiences organizing such events?

Milena: Yes, we have our own science camps in our organization; it’s like science camps for summer in Denmark.

How many people are going to organize ISSC’11?

Milena: There are 6 people from our organization here, but there are still more people in our team, about 20. The most important for now is the two of us.

What is your vision of ISSC in a future? In 10 years, for example?

Milena: I imagine that it continues to bring together young people from all over the Europe, for science. I think it’s a great project that should continue. Thinking about connecting people is a really a great purpose.

Should ISSC be more scientific?

Milena: You shouldn’t forget the connection to science and society, but it’s still science camp.

Line: A social part of a camp is also important.

What about the idea of splitting up different age groups in ISSC, like schools students and university students?

Milena: It could be interesting. Of course it’s a challenge to find a scientific level for thet. We are thinking about having two options, like physics and biology for example. Because if you are studying physics you may not have interest in biology and you don’t know that much about it.

The topic of this camp is “Science for society”. So what are the problems science could fix in your country?

Milena: That could be public transport. It’s expensive and not as reliable as expensive.

Line: Yes, definitely

Milena: And also a problem like everywhere – healthcare. It’s a difficult question, there are a lot things could be done.

Do you have any expectations for tomorrow – closing ceremony, presentations?

Milena: I’m wondering what the picture’s gonna be about. And I hope presentations will be good and I am interested to see what people were doing during workshops, what they came up with.

The last question, are you tired?

Milena: Obviously.

Line: Yeah, a bit.

Thanks! Next year we are meeting in Denmark!

ISSC’10 – the sixth day

Thursday was a really hard day in the camp – right after dawn everyone had to get up and get ready for a trip through the whole Lithuania to the Curonian Spit.

5 hours on the bus later Smiltynės ferry aroused and 5 minutes later the bus is on the road in the Curonian Spit, leaving the forest fireplace, one-housed village, the Black Coast behind. The first stop – the observation point of cormorans hatchery, the second – Naglis reservation and the Dead Dunes. After observing the fascinating beauty of Baltic Sea and Curonian Lagoon the journey continued and finally Nida was reached. The participants were taken in by the Secondary school of Nida. The final presentations of the participants and the introduction of the Curonian spit national park awaited the campers.

The first presentation was prepared by Lithuanian sisters Vaiva ir Guoda Radavičiūtės. The topic – „Pyridine N-oxide derivates – antifugal and antibacterial agents“. This presentation won the contest of young scientists in Lithuania and will be presented in the young scientist contest of European Union in Lisbon. „The new drugs are less toxic, often they shorten the time of clinical treatment and have less effects“ – the sisters spoke about their research.

The next presenter – Kaspar Johannes Meyer from Germany. „Unlike most of you, I study sociology, not natural sciences. That‘s why I wanted to combine sociological and scientific topics in my presentation so that it would be interesting for all of us“ – Kaspar said. His topic „Science in totalitaric societies“ introduced us to lysenkoism campaign, which was carried out in the Soviet Union until the 60s‘ and „The Aryan Physics“ – a movement in Germany in the 30s‘ which was directed against the works of Albert Einstein, called „The Jews Physics“. The audience was interested and the presentation was a real success.

After the presentations there was free time. Most of the participants did not miss the opportunity to bathe in the Baltic Sea while the others tried traditional fish dish or just admire the coastline scenery. „It really enjoyed the beauty of the nature. It was wonderful“, said Nina from Canada. Lea from Denmark added: „It‘s a really long trip to come here but it‘s totally worth it. Despite we have similar places in our country too, but it‘s nor the same as here“.

After a fun-packed day the participants got back to Vilnius deep into the night where the last day of the camp awaits including the final presentations, closing ceremony and farewell party with their new friends.

ISSC’10 – the fifth day

Wednesday was really filled with events: excursions in the morning, lecture, workshops and reports at day and the national Lithuanian evening. Everything got more and more interesting and the day finished with the national evening hitting the peak. The lack of sleep will definetely be felt in the near future.

Every participant got to chose from three different Lithuanian companies: JSC „Precizika Metrology“, JSC „Arginta“, JSC „Baltic Optical Disk Group“. JSC „Precizika Metrology" have great traditions of produciing and installing precisic meteorological devices which last for more than half a century. The company is known world-wide for its linear and angular slips measuring system and the provider of linear and angular rasters. It has a lot of experience and supports other companies in the geometrical measurment sphere. The goals of the company are to satisfy the client as much as they can, provide the market with quality products and service on fixed time for an economically reasonable price. A lot of attention and funds are used for the development of products and technological processes, scientific research which allows the company to improve the technical parameters, realiability of the products and increase the effectiveness of manufacturing.

JSC „Arginta“ was established in 1991. Its activity includes cutting material with a spurt of water, laser and plasma, the designing and making of out of the box products, making of a frameless glass fitting, cleaning of the sewage water and selecting, designing and installing the water improving-equipment, installing of technological device and pipelines and the ignition or adjustment of technological device and precesses. Today the manufacturing warehouses concentrate near the big cities - Vilnius, Kaunas, Klaipėda – about 15 km from the city centre.

JSC „Baltic Optical Disk“ – is the biggest company selling inscribed CD, DVD, HDDVD, BLU RAY and MC discs in the Baltic states. The company has two modern CD, DVD and MC discs factories: JSC „BRD“ in Vilnius and AS „Baltic Disc“ in Tallinn. Almost 70 millions of copies are made in both factories per year. The making of compact discs is successfully developed together with the leading companies in this field from Western Europe: KRAUSS MAFFEI, LEYBOLD, SINGULUS TECHNOLOGIES, MARABU, RUCCO, BAYER AG, MORTON, GENERAL ELECTRICS (Germany), AUTOTEC AG, NETSTAL (Switzerland), AXXICON (Holland).

All of the companies prepared for their presentations really well, the participants of the excursions were interested, had lots of questions and came back fulll of great impressions. „I really enjoyed it, especially the lasers“, said Sima from Lithuania, which went to JSC „Arginta“.

After the lunch the camps‘ scientific part continued: the campers listened to the lecture „Women in Scienc“ by the VU Centre of gender studies graduate student Lina Radžiūnienė. The distribution of genders in Lithuanian and European scientific companies was presented and the participants had a brief discussion about the reasons of this distribution.

The fourth creative workshops were completely different that the previous ones.An interview simulation, where the campers had to present their projects to potential investors, was initiated. The workgroups did their best but only few of them succeeded in achieving the highest marks. Malgorzata, Poland – „It was really the most interesting and the best occupation yet“.

The surprise of the day was produced by Tobias from Germany. Instead of making one presentation he talked twice and was awarded with an enormous amount of attention and support. The first talk was about modern holographic technologies , the other one – about positive psychology. The first topic is Tobias‘ subject of scientific research and the second one is his hobby. „In the modern world, where there are so many depressed and sick people,it is very important to focus on positive things“ – said Tobias and received a lot of positive response.

After spending so much time in Lithuania, it was time to get acquainted with Lithuanian customs, traditions, dances and songs. Everyone was learning how to dance polka and „Trepsiukas“ and everyone was dripping sweat.“Furthermore, this evening was a perfect opportunity for the secret (and sometimes direct) „Killer“ so many people faced their doom :) What is more, sometimes you have to celebrate your birthday at the camp. This time it was the 19 year old Artur Sousa from Portugal, who said that he loved this camp and was very happy that he could celebrate his birthday with such people. Congratulations!

Fun and dances did not last long because the trip to Nida was awaiting for them in the morning, The trip will be across the Lithuania so the departure is at 5 a.m. Someone thought it was not worth to go to sleep, so the non-sleeping records will be topped. Cannot wait for the next day!

Max Bigelmayr, Tobias Wenzel – “It’s perfect, you can’t do better”

As ISSC’10 reached its halfway, it’s the right moment to hear first opinions and maybe some critics about the camp. So the most suitable persons for that are representatives of juFORUM (Deutches Jungforscher Netzwerk). The presidents – Tobias Wenzel and Max Bigelmayr – were organizers of ISSC’09 which took place in Germany.

What are your impressions about this camp after four days?

Max: At first, this camp is really greatly organized. I think you’re doing the best you can. And in my opinion it is a sort of question of age. As we can see people here are younger than us so maybe it’s not the same interest as we have. I’m growing up and I’m a little bit older now so it’s a bit difficult for me to talk about it in their perspective.

Tobias: I could agree that it’s great what you’re doing. It’s in so many ways much better than we did last year.

How do you estimate lectures and workshops?

Tobias: First I was surprised, but I do like it that you do workshops and lectures not in scientific topics, I expected for scientific topics, but those you did, were really good because I think everybody have heard about this and have much more to say about. The idea of target groups is also good.

I have heard similar lectures as most of your lectures before but it’s just because I am older. I think for most of the people who are here it was really good.

How could you compare last years’ camp with this one?

Max: I think we should split this up: the things that we were organizing were really different from what you are doing but it is also important for us. I think the differences are that there were very few people there, we were really stressed; we had a lot of trouble. We were not as relaxed as you are. And it’s so nice to see that you are so relaxed, so happy, it’s a pleasure to see how you are doing all of this.

What are the advantages of this camp?

Tobias: It’s great that you managed to get so many sponsors; it’s usually the hardest part. And you have such a nice hotel. I think we have more workshops here than we had in Germany, those workshops are organized better than we did it. We had much more high technology companies in Germany so we used this more, but I think it’s a regional option.

Max: You have to look at participants and then you should compare how they are feeling. It’s perfect, you can’t do better. If you want to do it better, for example with higher education, presentations, stuff, it wouldn’t be good because all the participants would leave or would not be interested, so it’s the best thing you could do.

So can you find any disadvantages?

Max: One disadvantage – we should be a little bit younger. Four years for example (laughing).

Tobias: Maybe in some stages a schedule is a little bit tight, so you have to hurry a lot, but it is really difficult to do that because if you leave more space, people start saying that there was too much free time, we could do so many things instead. It is difficult but for some moments it would help. But it’s a small thing.

What is your opinion about the topic “Science for society”?

Tobias: I like this topic a lot, because I think it’s really good to have something more than just classical scientific topic. You made a possibility for so many different people from all over the world to come here. So it’s more important that everyone has to say something about this “Science for society”. What we have was “Science and industry” so not everybody could get interest of this.

Max: It will be more difficult to find a new good topic in future after this one. But I think it is a missing part about how science influences society. The main thing that I would think about if I heard the topic is what the main things that science gives to society are.

Tobias: I don’t agree with you because the topic is science for society, not science in society. So the workshops do matter, we have target groups in the society and you have to think about scientific solutions for problems. So I think it’s quite good.

Max: But you can also think about “how does the science influence society”. I just thought about it one or two weeks ago and it would be more like progress in science and what influences our living conditions.

It’s just too little time in the camp to look actually over all the possibilities. The main purpose of all the workshops is to create a scientific product, which would fit in to your target group.

Tobias: Yes, you’re right, it’s just a small critic, all in all it’s very good what you are doing.

Max: For me it seems to be more economy, like economy science for society.

What is your vision of ISSC in a future?

Max: I’m not sure about the goal of ISSC’s, but we all want it go on next year.

Tobias: I saw a list of MILSET members that are capable to organize it so it shouldn’t stop. But actually I have a vision of an European event for university students. Tomorrow I’m doing my report, but I’m not going to get in details, because I know that just one of five understands what I’m saying. So I want to organize something like an international science congress in Germany. The main point would be to find common statements and position for general topic. It would be some days for introduction for getting deep into the topic and people would have to read something related before they’re coming. It should be in higher educational level and more scientific than ISSC and as I’ve mentioned for older students.

Thank you for a pleasant conversation!

ISSC'10 - the fourth day

Yet another day of ISSC’10 has unnoticeably ended - it means that the camp has reached its halfway and will soon reach its peak! The fourth day consisted of one participants‘ – Max Bigelmayr – report, workshops and a trip to Molėtai.

Max Bigelmayr is a participant from Germany, which has taken part in many ISSC s and the former organiser of the last camp. Provided that his hobby is politics, he prepared an interesting and topical presentation about the modern political – social situation. The title „European Union: Objection to Democracy“ kept everyones‘ attention till the end and evoked a discussion about the pros and cons of political unions. „Big countries cannot be as democratic as small countries“ – said Max – „It is necessary to think of every field, what benefit and harm can being in a union bring “. He talked about how a sense of security of citizens in a society depends on the form of government, mentioning the regulations of the Lisbon Treaty. The final opinion was not approached. However, it was not the goal of the report. The most important is that the participants could pay their attention to things that are not always highlighted and emphasized; participants were free to express their opinion also.

Afterwards, there was a third creative workshop, where the participants had to plan their final presentation. Working groups had to compile a list of means they will need for their presentation. They had to think of a strategy on how to present their idea for potential investors. „My group is absolutely work –minded and they believe in their idea. So we have no problems. It is essential that the interview simulation will be successfull“- said one of the workgroup moderators.

After the lunch break, the campers headed to Molėtai. There was a music battle during the trip, where the most active people were Portugese Gonçalo and Francisco and the Lithuanian quartet. So you could hear southern melodies and Lithuanian pop-songs ringing together. The Mound of Kuloniai was used as a warm-up followed by the excursion to the Museum of Ethnocosmology, where a breath-taking scenery of Labanoras forest can be observed. This museum is the only one of this kind in the world because the cosmic exhibits are associated with ethnology . Of course, the stories about aliens, metheors, telescopes and life in the universe could not be avoided.

Next came the fun part. The bathing in the lake while listening to the thunder and watching the rainbow, pizzas for dinner and various geometric shapes in the centre of Molėtai – everything is recorded and will be remembered as the biggest orange spiral in history. Good job, mates!

Despite some of the participants started showing signs of sleep lack, there will be no sleeping on the next day of the camp. 3 excursions, 2 presentations, a lecture, workshops and national evening awaits the participants on Wednesday so we strongly advice you to gather strenghts.

ISSC’10 – the third day

The third day of ISSC’10, which was as interesting and entertaining as the previous ones, has ended. The excursions were the main treat of the day, but it would be inappropriate not to mention the lecture and workshops which were hosted by Liutauras Ulevičius and, of course, the traditional game of the orange people – „Poke‘r‘brain“.

During the excursions the participants got acquainted with the two biggest Lithuanian biotechnology companies: „Thermo Fisher Scientific“ (formerly „Fermentas“) and UAB „Sicor Biotech“.

„Fermentas“ is well known company with a self-preceeding global reputation. Invoking the latest knowledge from molecular biology, products for life science research and diagnostics are created and produced here. The company is one of the leading companies in biotech sphere in the world – products labeled „Fermentas“ are well known in laboratories of 70 different countries. Together with the high-grade molecular and cellular biology products including enzymes, chemical reagents and kits produced by „Fermentas“, „Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc“ can offer a comprehensive solution for genomic research, produce Polymerase chain reaction (PCR), quantitative polymerase chain reaction platform tools and resources. The corporation „ Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc“ is the world leader in serving science, enabling our customers to make the world healthier, cleaner and safer. With annual revenues of $10 billion, it has more than 30,000 employees and serve over 350,000 customers within pharmaceutical and biotech companies, hospitals and clinical diagnostic labs, universities, research institutions and government agencies, as well as environmental and industrial process control settings.

UAB „Sicor Biotech“ – is a corporation of biotechnologic pharmacy, producing recombinant biopharmaceutical drugs using the latest scientific and manufacturing technologies. In 2001 JSC „Sicor Biotech“ was incorporated in „Sicor Inc.“ . In January 2004 „Sicor Inc.“ became a part of „Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd.“. The quality of products by JSC „Sicor Biotech“ is compies with EU and USA regulations. State-of-the-art scientific laboratories, pilot production lines and a highly professional and competent staff assures the scientific and technological development potential of this company.

The impressions of the participants were positive, the presentations of companies were interesting and clear; the future scientists enjoyed listening about the companies‘ activity and manufacturing processes. Despina from Romania said: „It was interesting for me. I understood the main idea and only a few things that we didn‘t learn at school remained unclear but despite that I enjoyed it“. „It was especially interesting to hear about the centrifuge technology and how to extract proteins from the cell“,- Justas from Lithuania added. It looks that Lithuanian biotechnological industry is heading to the right direction and can represent the country globally.

After the excursions, there was a lecture given by the public relations‘ specialist Liutauras Ulevičius. The topic was „How to present your ideas?“. Lecturer was talking about the importance of paying attention to the kind of audience you are talking to, or how to defend your idea from negative remarks. „When working on a particular project, you gain experience and that is your competence. You have to show it adjusting it to a strategic object.“ – spoke L. Ulevičius. The knowledge gained from the lecture was used in practice during the following workshops. Lecturer emphasized common mistakes, which they should avoid during their presentations on Friday. The participants said they were not fully ready for this, but the remarks and the feedback they received would be essential for their further presentations.

At the end of the productive day – another intellectual challenge for our campers. The marathon of quick thinking which lasted more than three hours wore out almost everyone but the denouement left no one indifferent . Everyone had an opportunity to widen the scope of their knowledge because the questions were covered almost every topic – from football in Russia to Santa in Saudi Arabia. Of course the players were not afraid to give creative answers. A few of them inspired the legend of the „Super Ram“, who was protecting the cows . Eventually when the super-long qualification round was complete, the whole bag of carrots was given away and everyone‘s patience was put through a hard and challenging test, two teams „Estonians“ ir „1, 2, 3 go!“ met in the final. After an unsettled battle the second team was victorious and claimed the grand prize – brain cake which was used to regain the lost energy. The „Estonians“ received an edible crane. The „Blue girl team (WOW)“ which won the small final received a pack of grain. So congratulations for everyone who passed this brain-poking „Poke‘r‘brain“ challenge!

And so Monday has ended in a uplifted mood which was not ruined by the constant rain threat. It should continue on Tuesday as well because ISSC‘ will move on to Molėtai where more adventure awaits!

ISSC’10 – the second day

The camp is gaining momentum: Saturday was dedicated for arrivals and registration of the participants and on Sunday the camp was in full swing. The opening ceremony, first lecture and creative workshops is the best way to get things started and assure an oustanding teamsmanship.

The day started with an opening ceremony in the heart of Vilnius University. The organisers of this camp – LGMOA and MILSET Europe - were introduced during the ceremony. Chairman Indrė Grigaitytė spoke on the behalf of LGMOA and coordinator of support funds Gonçalo Pimentel from Portugal – MILSET Europe. They believe that the camp will be successfull and the most important thing is to smile. This was followed by an unconventional performance of L. van Beethovens „Ode to Joy“ by the orange team of bottle blowers. There was a performance by the guest musicians as well and the main accent of the ceremony – the illumination of „ISSC Connecting people“ sign.

„Anyone can be creative. You all have a genius deep inside of you“ – these were the words of Tomas Girdzijauskas whose lecture took place after the opening ceremony. The lecturer was speaking about how to generate ideas not only in science but in life as well. The scientific research and self experience of Mr. Girdzijauskas proved his words.

Next were the creative workshops. The participants were split into 8 groups which had different social groups asigned to them. The aim of the first creative workshops is to identify the problems which these social groups face and look for solutions. These ideas will be developed in the upcoming creative workshops until the presentation of the final product in the end of the camp. The majority of group members and moderators said that there were plenty of brilliant ideas and the work was pretty smooth so we can count on seeing something eye-catching and worth spreading at the end of the week.

After lunch time there was crunch time. The „City Rally“ was designed to help the participants to get acquainted with the old town of Vilnius where special tasks had to be performed. Divided into 6 teams players had to gain as many points as they could while visiting various sights within 3 hours. Finally the winner of the track, which consisted of P. Cvirka, V. Kudirka, Cathedral, S. Daukantas, K. Sirvydas, Town Hall squares and Gediminas castle, was the team „Flower Group“.

Tired but wired, the participants finished the day of with the international evening. It was started by Portugese representatives Gonçalo and Francisco, who introduced their organisation – AJC (Associação Juvenil de Ciência). Next were „juFORUM“ (Deutches Jungforscher Netzwerk) members Tobias and Lena from Germany, UNF (Ungdommens Naturvidenskabelige Forening) spokesman Milena from Denmark and eventually the presentation of the hosts - LGMOA. After the presentations came the gustations of national meals and drinks, fun and games. Not often do different cultures meet in one place so there was lots of interaction and communication. What is more, everyone readily shared their impression from the first day:

„I enjoyed the opening ceremony, especially the thing you did with the bottles. The lecturer was repeating himself but he spoke of interesting and useful things... And in the workshops my team had lots of ideas and it is good, we‘ll be working on it further. City Rally was really fun. And your food... It‘s totally different than ours , your bread has a caraway flavour. But it‘s interesting for me, I want to try everything.“ – Rebecca, Denmark.

„Everything that was said in the lecture was true but maybe a different approach was needed, take only the essential things into consideration. Workshops didn‘t go so well because it was hard for us to think about lonely mothers. City Rally was entertaining but we wanted to observe everything a bit longer and more thoroughly. We‘ve won, but we had to rush all the time.“ – Lorenz, Switzerland.

So that was the beginning. Great emotions among the participants and organisers allows us to expect that it will be only better from this point!

ISSC'10 is of the mark!

The big day, when almost 60 young and scientifically minded people from different countries gather in Lithuania, has come. The long awaited ISSC’10 (week-long International Science Summer Camp) has finally begun. This year the camp is organised by the orange LGMOA team.

Previous camps took place in such countries as Portugal, Sweeden and Germany. This years camp in Vilnius is the fifth ISSC . The right to organise this event is granted by an international network of organisations MILSET Europe (International Movement for Leisure Activities in Science and Technology). LGMOA is a member of this network since 2007. Each year the camp has a unique theme and now it is „Science for Society“. The participants will listen to lectures and work in creative workshops in order to learn how to present a scientific product to the society, sponsors etc.

First participants from Poland, Portugal, Romania, and Slovakia arrived to Lithuania on Friday while others from Canada, Denmark, Germany, Lithuania, Poland, Switzerland and Turkey showed up on Saturday. The camp begins on Sunday morning and afterwards the carousel of events will become unstoppable – lectures will vary with excursions, workshops – with fun and games, and don‘t forget national and international perfomances in the evening. And it will be like that untill next Sunday!

So we encourage you to follow the news about the adventures of future scientists from ISSC daily and don‘t be disappointed if you didn‘t manage to participate in the camp now – there‘s always next year!

An update of programme

Hello,

How are you doing? : ) We know it‘s been a while since we last wrote something here but we do have some news for you.

First of all – a reminder of deadlines:

For registration – June 1st,

For making a payment – June 10th.
